NURSE CLINICS
The practice operates a number of different nurse clinics - all of
which are free of charge. Michele or Liss-Ann, our two qualified V.N.s
are happy to see your pets at any of the following clinics:-
WEIGHT CLINIC
60% of adult dogs and cats are overweight which is why this is our
most popular clinic. Overweight pets are at a much higher risk of
developing joint disease and diabetes - even at a very young age.
Joint disease can lead to chronic pain and a requirement for lifelong
medication. Diabetes results in a need for daily injections of insulin,
frequent monitoring i.e. blood sampling and urinalysis and strict
dietary requirements.
Studies have shown that animals who maintain their optimum body weight
during their lifetime live, on average, 2 years longer than overweight
pets.
At our weight clinic your pet will be weighed to determine how much
weight your pet needs to lose and how to do this quickly and safely.
DENTAL CLINIC
80% of dogs and 75% of cats over the age of three years suffer from
some form of dental disease. Left untreated, this can lead to inflammation,
infection and chronic pain. In advanced cases bacteria from an infected
mouth can enter the bloodstream and cause damage to the heart, liver
and kidneys. At our dental clinics we do a thorough check of your
pet’s gums and teeth and give advice on how to help prevent
and treat dental disease.
FLEA EXAMINATION
Most pets at some point in their lives will have a problem with fleas
and there is a large number of products on the market for both prevention
and elimination. Not all products will be suitable and we are happy
to advise on the best treatment for your pet. It can often to difficult
to determine if your pet actually has fleas unless there is a very
heavy infestation and the use of a flea comb is usually required.
A quick examination by the nurse can confirm whether or not your pet
has a problem and what to do to protect both your house and your pet.
WORMING ADVICE
We all know that our pets should be wormed but what to use and how
often? The answer to both these questions depends on your pet’s
lifestyle e.g. does your cat like to hunt?, is your dog in frequent
contact with children? Do you know how your pet becomes infected by
worms and how they can cause problems in humans? At the worming clinic
we can answer these questions and decide on a suitable worming regime
to protect both your pet and the members of your household. We will
also weigh your pet so that we can administer an accurate dose of
medication.
NUTRITION
There is a vast array of pet foods available and it can often be difficult
to choose which one is best for your pet. Each different life stage
of your dog or cat from puppy and kitten through to middle and old
age has different nutritional requirements. At our clinic we can give
you the best advice on what type of diet will suit your pet so that
he or she can have a long, healthy life. If your pet develops a medical
problem e.g. arthritis, skin allergies or kidney disease, diet will
play a significant role in their treatment and can even prolong their
life.
SENIOR PETS
Both dog and cats are regarded as reaching middle age at approximately
8 years old (5 years old for large breed dogs). It is during this
life stage that many age related diseases become apparent. Arthritis,
kidney and liver disease, heart problems, high blood pressure and
dental disease are just some of the conditions that can affect an
older pet. However, many of these problems can be well managed with
both diet and medication so that we can significantly prolong your
pet’s life.
At our senior pet clinic we give advice on how to care for an older
pet and how you as an owner can spot the early signs of many of these
illnesses, e.g. increased thirst can be a sign of kidney problems
or diabetes.
