We are now able to offer consultations for assessment for herbal medicine treatment. One of our vets Alison Silvester has undertaken further training in herbal medicine and is keen to use it alongside conventional treatments to help support your pets.
Herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years and many of our modern medicines are derived from phytochemicals first isolated from plants. The benefit of using the herb versus just the active ingredient is that there is often a synergistic effect between many phytochemicals within the plant.
In particular these treatments can be useful to help support the body when dealing with chronic disease or having to take and process other medication. They can be used for all body systems such as skin disease, joint and musculoskeletal disease, liver disease, kidney disease, heart and respiratory disease and cancers.
We are passionate about using the most up to date evidence-based treatments and we do not see these as replacements for conventional treatments but they can be very useful for example to support animals in pain struggling to cope with the side effects of their pain killers or to help support the immune system of allergic animals with a view to being able to reduce their other medications.
We use only high quality, quality assured and medical grade herbs. We only use herbs that are sourced sustainably. There are various ways to use these medications but most commonly it is by using liquid tinctures of the herbs. Most animals will take them mixed with food.
The initial consultation lasts 30-40 minutes as these treatments are very much tailored to the individual animal so a thorough history is needed and an examination that assesses the animal in a slightly different way to our normal consultations. Because the medicines are made for the individual, the mix for your pet will not be made the same day so will be collected within 7 days along with written information about the findings, prescription herbal formula and treatment plan.
The consultation will cost £60 and tinctures cost £15 for 100ml bottle (this would last approximately 2 months for a cat/small dog, and nearer 16 days for a 25kg dog).
If you have any further questions you can contact Alison on [email protected]. Alison works on Thursdays and Fridays so will reply on those days.
