We are now running dedicated chronic pain clinics in the practice. The aim is to improve the comfort levels of our pets who experience chronic pain. This is achieved using a holistic approach via medications, complementary therapies, weight management and tailored lifestyle and exercise advice. They are being run by one of our vets Alison Silvester who has undertaken further training in pain management including acupuncture and is passionate about improving the quality of life of animals living with pain.
The initial appointment will last approximately one hour and will cost £100. Additional costs on the day will only incur if different medication is being dispensed. Acupuncture on the day of the appointment is included in the fee. The consultation will include a thorough history being taken including questions about your pet's lifestyle, activity levels and the specific concerns you have. We will review the medications your pet is or has been on and any diagnostic testing that has been done and then a thorough examination will be performed including examining gait and posture as well as a hands-on head to toe examination. Weather permitting, for dogs we may go for a walk to assess how they move at different paces. The length of the appointment is to allow plenty of time for questions and a more thorough examination than is possible in traditional consultations. In some circumstances it is possible for some of this to be done remotely, i.e. a questionnaire completed in advance of the appointment and sending videos of your pet moving around at home. |
The goal at the end of this appointment is to have created a treatment plan suitable for your pet depending on their level of pain, underlying disease, lifestyle etc. This may include exercise changes, diet changes, medication including supplements if indicated, acupuncture and in some cases further testing such as blood testing or diagnostic imaging like x-ray, or referral for physiotherapy where indicated. You will receive a written report within 7 days of your initial appointment with your pet's treatment plan.
After this initial appointment, any review appointments can be done during normal consultations, other than follow-up acupuncture which requires a slightly longer appointment time. |
These clinics are suitable for any age of pet with any painful condition, in particular those with recurrent problems. The goal is to take a holistic approach treating your pet as an individual and developing a tailor made treatment plan that can be fitted around them (and you!).
